The borough of Gravesham is situated in the Thames Gateway area of northern Kent, England. 93 800 people live in the borough, many living in the town of Gravesend and neighbouring Northfleet. The borough is also home to villages such as Cobham, Higham, Istead Rise, Luddesdown, Meopham and Shorne. The River Thames dominates the north of the borough. Gravesend was once a thriving port, with paper and cement industries in addition. The south of the borough is part of the North Downs area of countryside. Gravesham is 25 miles south east of London. As a consequence many now commute via the motorway or the direct rail links. Once the Ebbsfleet International station is complete, the area will also have direct access to continental cities. The Bureau itself is located in central Gravesend. Over 13 000 people used the Bureau last year, offering advice to help people solve over 15 000 problems. |
All Citizens Advice Bureaux endeavor to provide useful, impartial, confidential and free advice. The Bureaux are staffed by both volunteers and paid workers. Funding is independent of government departments.
Bureaux also operate under the coordination of Citizens Advice, which collates data from individual Bureaux in order to advise government about changes to social policy.
Gravesham, Northfleet and Swanscombe CAB was created in 1967. It was renamed Gravesham CAB in 1974 when the borough of Gravesham first came into existence. Now around 40 people work at the Bureau, most on a voluntary basis.
